Escape from forced recruitment leads to detention, and detention leads to ill-treatment. Interviewees described the arrest and detention of Rohingya attempting to avoid forced recruitment, and reported that detainees were routinely subjected to ill-treatment, with former detainees recounting beatings, burns, suspension and other physical abuse. The report notes Rohingya girls entering early marriage in the hope that married girls would be less likely to be conscripted. Displacement, lost livelihoods and conscription have also pushed women into the mining sector, where OHCHR records heightened risks of sexual violence and harassment by supervisors, guards and militia members operating with impunity.
