Nay Ni Hlaing Kha b. 1990 (Unknown)

Nay Ni Hlaing Kha was born on the upper Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River and trained as a painter. The war, he says, has never left the river. Airstrikes, burned villages, checkpoints on the road south, camps along the Thai border, and millions displaced within Burma itself. I work in line ink and digital color, in a register closer to reportage: soldiers, the civilians they displace, ordinary life continuing under occupation. Figurative work survives censorship in ways plain speech does not; an image can carry testimony past a checkpoint. The problem I keep returning to is how to tell a story in pictures when saying it plainly is not possible under war, subjugation, oppression, and displacement.
